After               participating               in               the               1978               New               York               City               Marathon,               two               Britons,               John               Disley               and               Chris               Brasher               were               inspired               to               start               a               race               where               runners               from               around               the               world               could               participate               amongst               a               spirit               of               camaraderie.

The               logistics               of               organising               an               event               of               this               scale               in               the               busy               city               of               London               seemed               impossible               at               first               but               Disley               came               up               with               a               running               course               of               26.2               miles               that               finally               seemed               plausible.

The               next               hurdle               was               the               total               cost               which               would               be               over               75000               pounds,               an               amount               that               seemed               financially               out               of               reach               for               both               men.

Luckily               for               them,               the               Gillette               Company               stepped               forward               to               become               the               first               sponsor               of               this               race               for               the               next               three               years.

There               were               certain               conditions               that               had               to               be               met               such               as               showing               people               that               there               could               be               unity               on               such               occasions,               London's               tourism               would               be               boosted               as               a               result               of               it               and               money               could               be               raised               for               London's               sporting               and               recreational               facilities.
               The               first               race               was               held               on               the               29th               of               March               1981               with               over               seven               thousand               participants               and               its               massive               success               attracted               over               18000               runners               in               the               following               year.

Since               then,               each               year,               the               numbers               of               people               taking               part               have               grown               and               on               the               25th               of               April               this               year,               over               36000               runners               will               be               participating.

The               event               will               be               shown               in               more               than               150               countries               around               the               world.

The               2010               Marathon               has               been               sponsored               by               the               Virgin               Group               which               was               attracted               to               the               prospect               of               being               part               of               the               biggest               annual               fundraising               event               in               the               world.

Since               1981               when               the               event               was               started,               over               450               million               pounds               has               been               raised               by               the               London               Marathon               for               charitable               causes.
               Sir               Richard               Branson               who               is               the               founder               of               the               Virgin               Group               will               be               dropping               the               starter's               flag               in               Blackheath               and               running               part               of               the               route               with               his               daughter               and               son.

For               the               younger               runners               there               will               be               a               Virgin               mini               London               Marathon               that               will               be               started               by               Liz               Yelling,               the               2006               Commonwealth               Games               Bronze               medallist.

Amongst               the               runners               will               be               Duncan               Kibet,               a               Kenyan               who               is               the               second-fastest               marathon               runner               in               the               world.

He               will               be               running               alongside               another               Kenyan,               Sammy               Wanjiru,               and               Ethiopian               Tsegaye               Kebede,               last               year's               runner-up.

Other               runners               are               from               Japan,               United               States               and               Australia               and               they               have               arrived               in               the               UK               after               the               flight               ban               was               finally               lifted.
               Many               of               the               runners               will               be               running               to               support               their               own               chosen               charities               and               raising               money               through               private               sponsorship.

Some               people               add               an               element               of               fun               by               running               the               marathon               in               fancy               dress               to               bring               their               cause               to               the               attention               of               those               who               are               watching.

Disabled               people               can               also               participate               in               wheelchair               racing.

Other               charities               have               a               set               number               of               entry               places               which               are               allocated               to               runners               to               help               raise               money               for               charity.

Some               of               these               charities               include               the               Children's               Trust,               British               Heart               Foundation               National               Asthma               Campaign,               Well               child               and               Shelter.
               Apart               from               raising               funds               for               charities,               the               tourism               industry               is               boosted               as               the               eyes               of               the               world               turn               towards               London               at               this               time.

The               runners               pass               famous               landmarks               that               include               the               London               Eye,               Tower               Bridge               and               Canary               Wharf               making               it               a               fun               day               not               only               for               all               those               who               participate               but               for               everyone               else               who               is               watching               the               event               either               from               home               or               cheering               the               runners               from               the               streets               of               London.
               Update:               Ethiopia's               Tsegaye               Kebede               won               the               men's               race               while               Russia's               Liliya               Shobukhova               won               the               women's               race.

Princess               Beatrice               became               the               first               Royal               to               run               the               2010               London               marathon.
